Surgery in Africa www.ptolemy.ca is a free, online
educational initiative from the Office of International Surgery, University of Toronto, Canada and the College
of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA).
Since 2005, monthly reviews on surgical topics relevant to surgeons and trainees in low-income countries have been posted.
The website features an international discussion group, a CME/CPD process accredited by the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Canada, archives of previous reviews and a resource library. EBM principles are adhered to when available.
The reviews survey the world literature and apply it to the African context. We believe they are useful for teaching and
clinical practice. African surgeons are encouraged to present their experience and write reviews.
